Warrant

May 17, 2024

Warrant refers to an order issued by a court directing a law enforcement officer to arrest and bring a person before the judge. This could be someone charged with a crime, convicted but failing to appear for sentencing, owing a fine, or in contempt of court. A “bench warrant” is issued when a person fails to appear for a hearing, and it can be resolved by posting bail or appearing. A “search warrant” permits law enforcement to search specific premises or persons for certain evidence, based on a declaration by a law enforcement official, often a district attorney.
